Frequently Overlooked or Misunderstood Ordinances


Year after year certain town laws seem to generate repeated questions or enforcement problems. Our top ten inquiries and enforcement problems are:

  • The Town's winter parking ban is in effect from December 1 through March 31 of the following year. During this period you can be ticketed for parking a motor vehicle on any public Town street between the hours of 11:00 pm and 6:00 am regardless of weather conditions.
  • Golfing is prohibited on all Town property, including school fields, parks and athletic facilities.
  • All buildings must be numbered. Numerals should be a minimum of four (4) inches in height and mounted to the front wall or porch of the building so that the number is clearly visible from the street. All commercial buildings require numbers and name of business on both the front and rear entrances
  • Unless you receive a permit from the fire department, outdoor burning is prohibited.
  • Residents are allowed two (2) yard sales per year without a permit. Each yard sale shall be no more than three (3) consecutive days.
  • Leaves should not be raked into the road. For collection by the Town, leaves must be placed in paper bags sold at cost at the Department of Public Works on Upland Way.
  • Residents or taxpayers may purchase a $30 beach sticker at the beach; $10 Senior Citizens.
  • There is a license fee of $6 for dogs, $5 license fee for cats and a $10 late licensure penalty. A current rabies certificate is needed when licensing your pets.
  • You must return your license plates to the Rhode Island Registry of Motor Vehicles to cancel your registration. The excise tax is based upon your plate cancellation receipt. You will be assessed for the number of days your plates are outstanding.
  • Bushes and landscaping on street corners should be no more than 2 1/2 ft. in height.

Cats and dogs must be licensed and have current rabies certificates. $6 for dogs, $5 for cats.
