Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the following (see also DPW-Programs for details):

  • Street and sidewalks

  • Snow removal

  • Sanitary sewerage systems

  • Storm drainage

  • Collection and disposal of refuse and recyclables

  • Maintenance of public parks

  • Maintenance of public buildings and grounds

  • Tree maintenance

Services

​Yard Waste (leaves, grass, small clippings) 

The curbside yard waste pickup is April through mid-December, check the Town calendar or call DPW for program dates. Residents may bring grass & leaves to the yard waste dumpster at the Recycling Center, Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to noon. 

  • Pick-up is the same day of regular refuse collection

  • Yard waste must be in paper bags or barrels

Trash/Refuse should be curbside by 7:00 a.m. on your pickup day. 

Recycling

 

The Recycling Center is located at 84 Upland Way. 

 

The hours of operation are now Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The Center is closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. 

  • Paint is NOT accepted at the Recycling Center. Click here to find out how to recycle paint. 

  • Used cooking vegetable oil is accepted at the Recycling Center. Residents may now bring used vegetable cooking oil to the Recycling Center. The collection container is provided by Newport Biodiesel. The cooking oil is processed into biodiesel at their Rhode Island facility. Biodiesel is a renewable, non-toxic fuel that can be used in any diesel engine or oil furnace.

  • Recyclable items may be collected curbside or brought to the center: 

    • Newspaper/corrugated cardboard/magazines/books 

    • Glass beverage containers 

    • Plastic soda/milk containers/drink boxes 

    • Aluminum cans/tin cans 

    • Junk mail 

    • White goods (metal) 

    • White goods (stoves, metal, etc.): Call for appointment 

    • Brush is chipped at curbside in the spring and fall. Call the DPW to schedule an appointment. 

    • Motor oil and oil filters can be brought to the recycling center (no curbside collection)

  • Household Hazardous Waste. To dispose of household hazardous waste, call RI Resource Recovery Corporation: (401) 942-1430 Ext. 241 

  • Mattress Recycling Program 

Mattresses from residents will now be accepted at the DPW and will be recycled at NO cost to the Town. This will save nearly 600 mattresses per year from being disposed of at the Central Landfill. 

 

The DPW will accept mattresses between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday at 84 Upland Way.

 

Mattresses must be dropped off by residents and have to conform to the following requirements:

 

Mattresses must be DRY

 

Mattresses must NOT have bed bugs or mold/mildew

 

Mattresses must NOT be damaged, twisted, or soiled

 

Limit of no more than 3 mattress pieces per resident per day

  • DUE TO THE CLOSING OF OUR STYROFOAM RECYCLER ON MAY 29, 2018 - THE TOWN WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT STYROFOAM FOR RECYCLING.

Sewer Division

The sewer division provides maintenance and inspection to the Town-wide sanitary sewer system consisting of approximately one hundred miles of sewer lines, six major pump stations, five submersible pump stations, four grinders and one air release chamber.
