Resilience
In Barrington, the hurricanes of 1938 and 1954 are still remembered for their destructive force. Hurricanes are not the only hazards; blizzards and heavy rainstorms have resulted in power outage, flooding, and other impacts. With almost 20 miles of coastline and low elevations across town, Barrington is committed to reducing impacts of natural hazards on the community.
Additionally, the Town adopted a Strategic Energy Plan in 2011 to promote energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction. Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations can now be found at Town Hall and Police Cove Park, and the Town is planning to replace it's vehicle fleet with electric vehicles when current vehicles reach end of life. In 2022, Barrington became the first town in Rhode Island to purchase an electric vehicle for its Police Department.
The Town passed a Resilient Future Resolution in 2021 to move towards 100% renewable energy by 2030.
