Election Information

Special Election for Congressional District 1

There will be a Special Primary Election on September 5, 2023 to nominate candidates to fill the vacant seat for Rhode Island’s Congressional District 1. The winners of the Primary Election will then be on the ballot for the Special General Election to be held on November 7, 2023 to elect the new Representative to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Primary Election - Tuesday, September 5, 2023

  • Sunday, August 6  - Last day to register to vote in the Primary Election and  Deadline to disaffiliate from a political party (Public Safety Building, Police Dispatch, 100 Federal Road, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM).
  • Tuesday, August 15 - Deadline to request a mail ballot, by 4:00 PM (Town Hall, Town Clerk’s office).
  • Tuesday, August 15 - Barrington Board of Canvassers will meet at 4:00 PM to canvass the final voter list for the Primary Election (Town Hall).
  • Wednesday, August 16 through Tuesday, September 5 - Early voting at Barrington Town Hall (Council Chamber, 2nd floor) during regular business hours; early voting ends at 4:00 PM on September 5.
  • Tuesday, September 5 - Primary Election Day, polls open 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM (polls combined; see IMPORTANT INFORMATION shown below). See Board of Canvassers agenda posted to the Secretary of State's website. See warrant for the September 5, 2023 Primary (PDF)

Special General Election - Tuesday, November 7, 2023

  • Sunday, October 8  - Last day to register to vote in the Special Election (Police Dispatch, 100 Federal Road, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM).
  • Tuesday, October 17 - Deadline to request a mail ballot, by 4:00 PM (Town Hall, Town Clerk’s Office).
  • Tuesday, October 17 - Barrington Board of Canvassers will meet at 4:00 PM to canvass the final voter list for the Special Election (Town Hall).
  • Wednesday, October 18 though Monday, November 6 - Early voting at Barrington Town Hall (Council Chamber, 2nd floor) during regular business hours; early voting ends at 4:00 PM on November 6.
  • Tuesday, November 7 - Special Election Day, polls open 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM (polls combined; see IMPORTANT INFORMATION shown below). See warrant for the November 7, 2023 General Election (PDF).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – POLLING LOCATIONS WILL BE COMBINED FOR THE PRIMARY AND SPECIAL ELECTIONS 

  • Barrington High School (BHS) - Polling location for Precincts 101 & 106 - If you usually vote at BHS or Town Hall, your polling place will be Barrington High School for the 2023 Primary and Special Elections.
  • Barrington Middle School (BMS) - Polling location for Precincts 102 & 103 - If you usually vote at BMS or Nayatt School, your polling place will be Barrington Middle School for the 2023 Primary and Special Elections.
  • Hampden Meadows School (HMS) - Polling location for Precincts 104 & 105 - If you usually vote at HMS or Sowams School, your polling place will be Hampden Meadows School for the 2023 Primary and Special Elections.

PLEASE NOTE: Nayatt School, Sowams School, and the Town Hall will not be used as polling places for the 2023 Primary and Special Elections.
